How Did It Begin?

Rather than being created by one individual, these legendary guardians developed through centuries of folklore, craftsmanship and artistic interpretation.

Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD)
Guardian creatures became established within imperial art and ceremonial architecture.

The Three Guardians
Pi Yao (貔貅)
Traditionally admired as a celestial guardian associated with preserving prosperity and safeguarding treasured possessions. Its image became especially appreciated among merchants and trading families throughout Imperial China.
Qi Lin (麒麟)
Often described as one of the most benevolent mythical creatures in East Asian tradition, the Qi Lin came to represent wisdom, harmony and virtuous leadership. Historical writings associate its appearance with periods of peace and good governance.
Guardian Lion (Fu Dog) 石獅
Standing at the entrances of temples, palaces and ancestral homes for well over a thousand years, Guardian Lions became enduring reminders of courage, vigilance and steadfast guardianship. Today they remain among the most recognisable figures in traditional Chinese architecture.
Traditional Practice
Throughout Chinese history, important places were rarely entrusted to a single guardian. Different celestial creatures were appreciated for different virtues, creating a harmonious balance within architecture and decorative arts.
Within traditional Chinese metaphysical thought, guardian motifs were also appreciated alongside the philosophy of the Five Elements. During periods associated with stronger Earth influences, metal objects displaying guardian imagery were traditionally selected as part of a broader approach to maintaining elemental balance and resilience through changing seasonal cycles.
Continuing the Story
Although these guardians once stood before palace gates and temple entrances, their stories did not remain there.
Today, they continue in a more personal form, accompanying everyday journeys while preserving traditions that have travelled through more than two thousand years of Chinese history.
