Pi Xie Guardian Sculpture with Stand
An auspicious guardian of prosperity, protection and enduring fortune.
A striking representation of one of Chinese culture's most recognised mythical guardians, the Pi Xie (貔貅), also known as Pixiu, is traditionally associated with prosperity, the safeguarding of wealth and protection against misfortune.
This intricately sculpted ornament features a magnificent green, jade-like Pi Xie rising above an ornamental stone-effect base, supported by an elaborate dark decorative stand. Its richly layered design, expressive mythical features and traditional auspicious inscription make it a distinctive piece for the home, office or personal collection.
The Legend of the Pi Xie
In Chinese mythology, the Pi Xie is a celestial creature often depicted with features resembling a lion, dragon and other powerful animals.
According to traditional folklore, the creature possesses an extraordinary appetite for precious treasures, including gold, silver and jewels. A particularly well-known legend describes the Pixiu as a creature that consumes wealth but does not release it.
This unusual characteristic gave rise to its enduring association with the accumulation and preservation of prosperity.
Over generations, representations of the Pi Xie have become popular decorative symbols among merchants, business owners and households wishing to express aspirations for financial stability, security and success.
The Pi Xie and Tai Sui
The Pi Xie is also associated in popular Chinese metaphysical traditions with Tai Sui (太歲), commonly known as the Grand Duke Jupiter.
In traditional Chinese astrology, Tai Sui refers to the annual celestial influence associated with the 60-year cyclical calendar. Certain zodiac relationships with the year's Tai Sui are traditionally regarded as requiring additional mindfulness and caution.
For this reason, Pi Xie figures are sometimes displayed as symbolic guardians during years associated with Fan Tai Sui (犯太歲), or conflict with Tai Sui.
These practices belong to traditional Chinese cultural and metaphysical belief systems. The sculpture itself is a symbolic representation rather than a substitute for a professional Feng Shui assessment.
Understanding the Sculpture's Symbolism
The Pi Xie — Guardianship and Wealth Preservation
The central mythical creature represents vigilance, determination and the traditional aspiration to accumulate and safeguard prosperity. Its imposing form conveys strength and confidence.
The Green, Jade-Like Appearance — Heritage and Refinement
Jade has long held an esteemed place in Chinese decorative arts, where it is associated with virtue, refinement, longevity and cultural prestige. The sculpture's deep green, translucent-looking finish recalls this traditional aesthetic.
The Auspicious Inscription — Prosperity and Protection
The stone-effect base bears Chinese characters that appear to read 旺財辟邪 (Wàng Cái Bì Xié), an auspicious expression commonly understood as invoking flourishing wealth and the warding away of harmful influences.
The inscription reinforces the sculpture's traditional identity as a guardian ornament.
The Ornamental Display Stand — Presentation and Presence
The intricately shaped dark stand elevates the sculpture, giving it the visual prominence of a collected decorative artwork. Its contrasting finish complements the green figure and natural stone-effect base.
Did You Know?
Although the names Pi Yao, Pi Xie and Pixiu are often used interchangeably in modern retail descriptions, their interpretations can vary across regional folklore and different schools of traditional practice.
The Pixiu has become especially recognisable in contemporary Chinese decorative culture as a symbol of prosperity and wealth preservation.
Its significance lies not only in the legends surrounding it, but also in the centuries-old tradition of expressing personal aspirations through mythical creatures and symbolic objects.
Displaying Your Pi Xie
With its substantial proportions and decorative stand, this sculpture makes an elegant statement in a study, office, living room, reception area or curated display cabinet.
It may be appreciated as a work of traditional-inspired decorative art, a symbolic guardian or a meaningful gift for someone establishing a business, moving into a new home or celebrating a significant milestone.
For those who follow traditional Feng Shui practices, placement should be considered in relation to the property's actual layout and the particular system being applied, rather than relying on a universal direction.
